My Technique

I thought I would show you how I go about creating one of my pieces. I start with a drawing from one of my photographs. In this painting it is a species of dock, specifically Canaigre Dock. (Rumex hymenosepalus).

When I first moved to the desert southwest I was pleasantly surprised to discover the incredible diversity that is the Sonoran Desert. Far from a barren wasteland often depicted in western folklore, it is a place of vast numbers of both plants and animals. And, of course, the spectacular panoramic vistas only add to the feeling that you are living in a picture postcard.

First of all, let me borrow a line from the Grateful Dead...what a long strange trip its been. I grew up in Appalachia, not far from Wheeling, West Virginia. I decided at seventeen that working in the coal mines was not for me and soon found myself standing at an on-ramp with my thumb out. It was the Sixties and adventure beckoned. I'm a self taught artist, primarily focusing on the natural world. I enjoy painting the flora and fauna of this beautiful planet. I currently live in Arizona, and most of my recent works reflect the inhabitants of the Sonoran desert.
